A new era is here for Futsal on the Sunshine Coast. The plans have been in place for some time, but as of this week it is official: Sunshine Coast Futsal Association (SCFA) has joined forces with Sunshine Coast Football (SCF). The local Futsal Association has recently been named as an affiliate club/member of Sunshine Coast Football. This new affiliation will also see Futsal (Indoor Football) aligned with Football Queensland (FQ), Football Federation of Australia (FFA), and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
FFA has also recently announced that the winner of the Open Men’s category at the 2009 Futsal National Titles will represent Australia at the AFC Futsal Club Championships. At this stage, Sunshine Coast Futsal Association is the first Futsal organisation in Queensland to align themselves with the FFA, and as a result, Sunshine Coast players will be given every opportunity to represent their state. Futsal is incredibly strong in the Asian market, and this will also give local Sunshine Coast players the chance to represent their country with all integrated steps of affiliation now in place.
Sunshine Coast Futsal Director of Coaching (DOC), Trevor Edwards, has stated that there has been a need to “focus on the similarities of both the indoor and outdoor versions of the game, in an attempt to advance the sport whilst keeping the best interests at heart of both codes”. Edwards also has plans for an improvement of the professionalism and quality of the local Futsal product, which runs during summer at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Caloundra Indoor Stadium will also host various other Futsal matches. Many high profile local 1st division football players will be in action.
