Kohima | February 10 : The 2nd Open Futsal Tournament (five a-side soccer) got underway here at the Kohima Local Ground this morning under the aegis of Excel United Club, Kohima.

Gracing the inaugural function, Neise Mechulho, Director, Land Resources said we may consider the Futsal game as a new game to us but when we look closely it is non other than intensified football game, where it gives more vigour, faster in playing and quality of players are being promoted.
He also stated that through this game the player can refine to become a higher standard footballer. Internationally renowned player like Maradona, Ronaldo etc. are product of Futsal, he added.

Regretting that Nagaland hardly participates at the national levels in football, he informed that through this game (Futsal) the quality and standard of football can be promoted among the Naga youth to reach even the international level.
“We have to accept the challenges and venture further,” he said.

He also stressed on the need for the sports associations and the state government to give serious attention towards the promotion of Futsal in the state. He was of the view that such tournament must be held frequently not only in Kohima but also in other districts of the state.
Dziesesakuo Rutsa, president Excel United Club said that altogether 12 teams, which included 11 teams from Kohima and 1 from Peren are taking part in this five days long event. Earlier, Rev. Father N.K. Abraham, Parish Priest, SFS Kohima invoked God blessing.
