FUTSAL is gaining popularity in the country after our national Futsal team Kurukuru played in the Futsal World Cup in Brazil last year. Star Sports discovered this after covering the recent Futsal league at Chichnige community in Central Guadalcanal last week. After the completion of the Futsal league, many at Chichnige said they decided to establish the league after seeing our national side in last year’s World Cup in Brazil.
Futsal is a five-a-side indoor version of soccer.
Captain of Peace team that won the Chichnige Futsal League told star sports that many youths in the community have shown their interest in this code of soccer after hearing about our young Futsal team playing in the World Cup in Brazil.
“We admired our young boys playing in the World Cup. This motivates most of us resulting in our leaders starting up this league here,” the captain said.
He added the league helped keep many of them busy and stay out of trouble. The Chichnige Futsal League was completed Tuesday last week. Six teams participated.
This was the first ever Futsal league to be organised on Guadalcanal. Solomon Islands Development Trust (SIDT) sponsored it under their ‘Ting Ting Helti Project’. By PHILIP LILOMO
