Day 9 (Oct 8) game: Russia 9 Japan 1

Russia coast as Japan exit

Russia marched on to the second round at Brazil 2008 this afternoon with a thumping and thoroughly deserved 9-1 victory over Japan in Maracanazhino.

The Asian hopefuls had begun the day knowing that victory would take them through at the Russians' expense, but they now head for home in the knowledge that they were beaten by a clearly superior side.

Russia, fresh from that record-breaking 31-2 win over the Solomon Islands, were outstanding at times, confirming their status as genuine title contenders with a display of power and panache.

At the heart of much of their best play was the brilliant Dmitry Prudnikov, who gave notice of his intentions by firing home the first goal at the end of a slick one-touch move. Soon after, Damir Khamadiev added the second from a corner kick, and as Japan pushed forward, Russia punished them ruthlessly on the counter-attack, Khamadiev making it 3-0 after just 10 minutes.

The pace dropped discernibly for the remainder of the first half as Russia coasted into a six-goal lead but it soon picked up again after the re-start, with Khamadiev completing his hat-trick only 23 seconds into the second half.

Japan did claim a consolation through Yuki Kanayama, and while that was warmly received by the crowd, the local fans also made a point of standing to acclaim a Russian team that had provided a genuine futsal masterclass.

Damir Khamadiev, Russia player
The best way to win a World Cup is by focusing on winning your next game, nothing else. Even more important than the goals we scored against Japan and Cuba is the fact that we played well and are lucky enough to be in the next round.

Sergio Sapo, Japan coach

Despite having a young and inexperienced team, our objective was to make it through to the next round. And though we gave it everything we had, even against two of the title contenders, Brazil and Russia, we came up short. Nevertheless, I am very proud of my players.

Day 7 (Oct 6) game: Japan 4  Cuba 1

Japan undo plucky Cuba

Japan face a battle with Russia on Wednesday to see who will emerge as the second placed team in Group A following the former's 4-1 victory over Cuba.

The Asians almost took the lead as early as the eighth second when Yusuke Inada forced a good save from Wilfredo Carbo. The veteran keeper, the oldest player in the competition, also denied Inada two minutes later as well as Rikarudo Higa and Yusuke Komiyama inside the opening 15 minutes.

Despite Japan's domination, it was Cuba who took the lead against the run of play in the 16th minute; Yampier Rodriguez with an inch-perfect lob over the goalkeeper. The goal rocked Japan who were fortunate not to concede another when Boris Saname's shot rattled the post shortly before half-time.

Carbo again frustrated his opponents with some fine goalkeeping, but was powerless to stop Nobuya Osodo's shot in the 24th minute which crept between his legs. Two minutes later, Japan were in front through Kotaro Inaba and the Japan No11 played a key role in Japan's final two goals.

First Inaba's thunderous effort was spilled by Carbo into the path of Yuki Kanayama, who made it 3-1 and then he turned goalscorer with six minutes remaining when Inada provided the assist.

Day 5 (Oct 4) game: Japan 7  Solomon Islands 2

Japan heap woe on islanders

Japan picked up their first points of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 on Saturday with a 7-2 win over Solomon Islands in Brasilia.

The lively East Asians were up 3-0 inside 12 minutes thanks to goals from Yuki Kanayama, Kenichiro Kogure and Yusuke Komiyama, setting the stage for the eventual rout to follow. An own goal from Yoshifumi Maeda in the 18th minute saw a glimmer of hope for the Oceania men, compounded by Ron Ginio's goal just a minute later which made it a tight 3-2.

It was a false dawn for the Solomons though, as Kenta Fujii made in it 4-3 in the 23rd minute and a pair of strikes from Nobuya Osodo and one more from Yusuke Inada ended the affair and brought yet another heavy defeat down on the deflated islanders in Brazil.

Japan now move into second place in Group A, tied on three points with Russia and Cuba. The Solomons, despite putting up some brave resistance in their games, are out of contention for a place in the next round.

Day 1 (Sept 30) game: Brazil 12 Japan 1

Brazil thrilled their own fans and overwhelmed Japan en route to a 12-1 victory in their FIFA Futsal World Cup curtain-raiser. Lenisio, Falcao, Ari and Schumacher scored twice apiece, and Marquinho, Wilde, Betao and Cico were also on the scoresheet for the tournament hosts.

Both sides had shots on targets in a frenetic opening couple of minutes, before quick-fire goals from Lenisio and Marquinho put the Seleção two goals up. Falcao amplified their lead from the penalty spot, before Nobuya Osodo pulled one back for Japan on the quarter-hour mark.

It proved the prelude to a Brazilian onslaught. Although they did not increase their advantage before the first period was out, they ran riot in the second, scoring nine times without reply.

The supporters' enthusiasm made for a carnival atmosphere at the Gimnasio Nilson Nelson, and aside from the goals, Paulo de Oliveira's charges entertained them with their customary plethora of flicks and tricks. Moreover, Brazil firmly underlined their title credentials.
