Day 9 (Oct 8) game: Portugal 3 Thailand 2

Portugal and Thais tumble out

Thailand, one of the pleasant surprises of the first round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008, were eliminated on Wednesday after a dramatic 3-2 loss with Portugal, who also head for home. The lively Asians made heavy work of it for the Lusitanians, grabbing what looked like a late equaliser, only to see their hopes dashed in stoppage time.

It looked it was going to be an easy day for the Portuguese when, in only the second minute, Arnaldo hammered home to put them up 1-0. Slowly but surely, though, the Thais hauled themselves back in the contest. On 19 minutes they were level through Eekapong Suratsawang.

Six minutes into the second half, Portugal were up again. This time it was Israel who belted home from close range to make it 2-1. The Thais refused to go away, though, and with one minute to go, Panuwat Janta struck to draw level at 2-2.

Portugal's Cardinal then struck the decisive blow in the dying moments and seal a 3-2 win.

Thailand finish their excursion on four points from four Group B games. Portugal, for their part, are also out as their goal difference is inferior to Paraguay and Italy, who both move on to the next round.

Orlando Duarte, Portugal coach
Our goal was to qualify for the next round. As a result all our hard work has been in vain. We played a good game but our fate wasn't in our own hands today.

Jose Pazos, Thailand coach

This team can mature and go far, because it's a young side and has quality. It's true that they haven't gained much experience yet, but of course they have a good chance of making progress.

Day 7 (Oct 6) game: Thailand 0 Paraguay 8

Villalba fires rampant Paraguay

Paraguay moved into a dead heat with Portugal for second place in Group B of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 with an 8-0 win over Thailand on Monday in Rio.

Rene Villalba was the hero for the South Americans. After opening the scoring in the 5th minute, he added two more goals in the 12th minute (one from the spot) to seal a first-half hat trick.

The Italy-based striker and veteran of the last FIFA futsal finals made it 4-0 just four minutes into the second half, making it plainly obvious that the Thai defence simply had no way of handling the attacking threat he posed. Villalba then turned provider for Paraguay's fifth goal, setting the table for Jara who slammed home in the 27th minute.

Rene's older brother, Walter, sparked another moment of joy for the Villalba family with a goal in the 31st minute before Roman added a pair in the dying moments to seal the 8-0 rout.

Paraguay are now on six points, tied with Portugal for second place in Group B behind Italy.

Day 5 (Oct 4) game: Thailand 5 USA 3

Thailand cashes in on timely goals

Rio de Janeiro -- Thailand broke open a close game by scoring two goals a minute apart to record a 5-3 Group B win over the United States in the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ Saturday.

The result kept Thailand (1-0-1, 3 points) in the hunt for the final phase while the USA (0-0-3, 0) was eliminated at Maracanazhino.

The USA had the game's first clear chance, but goalkeeper Surapong Tompa stopped Denison Cabral's penalty kick with his face.

The Thais took control by scoring twice within a short span as Eakapong Suratsawang connected off a counter-attack in the 14th minute and Prasert Innui (after a set piece from a corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Americans closed the gap as Mike Apple found the back of the net just before the halftime whistle in the 20th minute. Apple turned playmaker, setting up Cabral's equalizer two minutes into the second half.

But Thailand again took over the game for good, again with two quick goals, off a counterattack and a set piece -- Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn in the 29th minute and Panuwat Janta in the 30th minute.

Sermphan Khmthinkaew gave the Thais a two-goal bulge in the 39th minute before the USA's Pat Morris closed out the scoring in the final minute.

Day 1 (Sept 30_ game: Italy 1 Thailand 0

Italy were made to work hard for the three points they gained over a resolute Thailand side in the opening match of Group B at the Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro today.

Despite taking the initiative by alternating lively strikers Sandro Zanetti and Adriano Foglia up front, the Azzurri found it difficult to turn the possession they had into chances, being frustrated time and time again by a tight Thai defence and some excellent goalkeeping from Surapong Tompa.

Indeed, the East Asians had the first real chance of the game, hitting the post following a counterattack.

The only goal of the game came five minutes before half-time, Grana keeping his cool to dispatch the ball into the net. However, Thailand responded well and Prasert Innui had three wonderful chances to equalize in the first half, but squandered them all.

The pick of these came from the penalty spot, which he cannoned off the post.

The second half saw Panomkorn Saisorn sent off for two yellow cards as Italy hung on for victory
