Day 10 (Oct 9) game: Ukraine 4  China 2

Ukraine reign in Group C

Ukraine qualified for the second round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 as group winners after a 4-1 defeat of China in Rio de Janeiro.

Although Ukraine dominated the match in the first half in terms of possession and chances, they had little to show for their efforts, having been frustrated time and time again by China's goalkeeper Zheng Tao who stopped everything aimed at his goal, including a superb save from Valeriy Legchanov's effort from the second penalty spot.

China, although outplayed, never gave up and had chances of their own which forced Yevgen Ivanyak into some fine saves. However, everyone in the Maracanazinho was still shocked in the 19th minute when after a quick break from Liu Xinyi, Hu Jie fired the Asians ahead.

The lead was shortlived when Ukraine equalised with just 13.6 seconds of the half remaining through Valeriy Zamyatin. Zamyatin was also on hand to score Ukraine's second in the 33rd minute.

After taking the lead, Ukraine produced their best football of the end and sealed the final result with goals from Ildar Makayev and Dmytro Silchenko. They now enter a group which contains Brazil, Iran and Italy in the next group phase.

Valeriy Zamyatin, Ukraine player

There are never any easy games at the World Cup, and China proved that today. Our next group is very tough and we need to be prepared, not just to take on Brazil and Italy but also Iran, who are a very strong side.

Hu Jie, China player

I'm delighted to have scored a goal in my first World Cup finals. I started playing futsal four years ago, and even though we haven't reached the second round, I hope we've helped contribute to the growth of the sport in my country.

Day 8 (Oct 7)game: China 1 Gutemala 10

Guatemala take positive step

Guatemala improved their hopes of reaching the second round with a convincing 10-1 victory over China PR in Brasilia. The result moved the reigning North, Central America and the Caribbean champions on to six points from a possible nine, and left their opponents pointless at the foot of Group C.

Guatemala were 2-0 up within four minutes, courtesy of strikes by the in-form Erick Acevedo and Daniel Tejada, and by the interval they had scored seven times without reply.

The second half was a much tighter affair, with its first goal arriving almost 12 minutes in through Chinese forward Liu Xinyi.

However, it served as a wake-up call to the Guatemalans. Marlon Noj quickly made it 8-1, before Jose Gonzalez and Carlos Estrada posted their second and third goals of the game respectively to complete the scoring.

Day 6 (Oct 6) game: China 2 Egypt 6

Egypt ease to win over China

Egypt won their first match at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 following a 6-2 victory over China PR at the Gimnasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia.

The Africans enjoyed the better start to the game and were unlucky not to take the lead as early as the fifth minute when Ahmed El Agouz hit the inside of the post. Five minutes later they did take the lead, through Ahmed Abou Serie Sameh Saleh.

Mizo doubled Egypt's advantage eight minutes later after being well set up by Abou El Komsan. A minute later, the provider turned goalscorer when his powerful shot left Tao Zheng with no chance.

Any chance of China making a comeback was swiftly snuffed out in the second half, when El Agouz bagged a brace in two minutes to take the score to 5-0. However, the Asians did pull one back in the 25th minute through Xi Zhang.

The five goal cushioned was restored just two minutes later through Saleh. With the score at 6-1, Egypt were content to play keep-ball and Jie Hu's last minute goal was little more than a consolation for China, who are without a point after two games.

Farinha, China PR coach
We didn’t deserve to win today as Egypt were technically superior to us. However, the scoreline is not a true reflection of the game, given the amount of chances we threw away.

Moafak El Sayed, Egypt coach
Today’s match was harder than our previous two. We still have a chance of reaching the next round, and we’ll be hoping the result of the Argentina-Ukraine game works in our favour.

Day 2 game: Argentina 5 China 0

Gimenez treble spurs Argentina

Argentina opened their FIFA Futsal World Cup Brazil 2008 campaign with a 5-0 win over China PR in Brasilia. A first-period hat-trick from Marcelo Gimenez put the Albiceleste firmly in command, before Martin Amas and Sebastian Corazza put the seal on a convincing victory.

Argentina swiftly assumed the ascendancy, but they found Chinese goalkeeper Tao Zheng in impressive form. He made three early saves, the pick of them to deny Esteban Gonzalez the opener on five minutes.

Zheng was, however, powerless to prevent Gimenez breaking the deadlock soon afterwards, and the No10 quickly doubled his side's advantage following a corner.

Gimenez made it 3-0 before the break, and Amas scored in the 30th minute to put the game effectively out of China's reach. The Asians did respond by bringing on an extra outfield player in place of their keeper, but their reward was to concede a fifth goal courtesy of Corazza's delightful lob.
